Most interesting is this past Weds., at the oncology appointment, we were told that Vit. E and Selenium can cause aggressive prostate cancer (opposite of what I had been reading and hearing). Tthe doctor could not remember the study name, but it contained many men in control groups. Lo and behold...Dr. E on the podcast, mentions the SELECT trial of which 35,000 men over a period of 5.5 years were studied, AND he points out the flaws in the study.
I will publish an article containing my notes on this podcast, but in short - a synthetic form of Vitamin E in high doses was used - and vitamins and minerals should always be formulated to work synergestically - NEVER taken individually in high doses. (More is never better.)
I went in search of the SELECT study last night. I was quite surprised to read in the NIH October 2008 report that men involved in the study were allowed to take a drug that was not yet approved by the FDA, because it was shown to reduce 5 alpha reductase. Digging further on the drug, finasteride, Rx reports indicate it may contribute to high grade prostate cancer. Is it just me, or does allowing study particupants to also take a drug discredit the results of the study?
If you do not yet have a health advocate and you are going through cancer, I highly encourage you to take someone along with you on all your appointments. We simply cannot trust everything we are told is truth...the scientific "truths" can be falsified with poor control group choices and allowances.
Be aware, and be prepared!
